Zimbabwe Cricket has applied for and been granted a week’s extension by the International Cricket Council, for the submission of its final 15 players for the World Twenty20 tournament.
The original submission deadline for the tournament, which is in Bangladesh from the 16th of March to the 6th of April, was today (Saturday the 15th of February, 2014).
The application followed the disruption in the resumption of the domestic season last Monday, when players refused to play before they had received the salaries and match fees ZC owed them.
That boycott put paid to the domestic twenty20 tournament that ZC had organised to run from last Monday to Saturday, which would have been used as preparation and trials for the ICC World Twenty20 showcase.
To replace last week’s tournament, ZC has come up with a three-day programme which will run at Harare Sports Club from Monday the 17th to Wednesday the 19th of February, with Thursday as a reserve day. The 30 players in the provisional Zimbabwe squad for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament together with six others identified by the national coaching staff and selectors, will be divided into three sides.
These teams will play each other in twenty20 matches over the three days, giving the players the final chance to stake their claims to the 15 tickets for Bangladesh, and also helping with their preparations for the global tournament.
The three sides are:
Sikander Raza Butt, Tendai Chatara, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Michael Chinouya, Daniel Housego, Hamilton Masakadza (captain), Shingirai Masakadza, Brighton Mugochi, Tawanda Mupariwa, Natsai M’shangwe, Richmond Mutumbami (wicket-keeper) and Cephas Zhuwao.
